Obama offers 7-year protection for biotech drugs - Dayton Business Journal:

http://hregypt.net/en/press/04/1123.htm
The biopharmaceutical industry has argued that the five years of protection offeree by Waxmanin H.R. 1427 woulfd stifle innovation. But the in a report earlied this month said the 12 to 14 years that the industrty has said publicly that it wants also would hurt innovation anddelay patients’ access to cheaper drugs. Eshoo’as H.R. 1548 calls for a 12-year periodc of data exclusivity, basically protecting the patents coverin g innovativebiotech therapies.
In a letter to Waxman, Nancy-Annb DeParle, Obama’s health-care reform director, and budget directord Peter Orszagsaid “the seven-year policy in the FY 2010 Budget is a generoues compromise between what the FTC researc has concluded and what the pharmaceuticakl industry has advocated.” , however, said it is “extremely that the seven-year plan is “a risky shortcut to biosimilars.
” “We believe this abbreviates period will undermine the incentives necessary for continuec biotech research into breakthrough medicinezs and cures for diseases such as multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s and HIV/AIDe as well as unmet medical needs,” BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwooc said in a statement. Tranzyme Pharma mulls cash options to test drug - Philadelphia Business Journal:

torbjorntrainer1738.blogspot.com
With solid results from phase II clinical trials in hand, Tranzyme Pharma has three choices for its next move finding a partner, raising as much as $60 millioj or selling the company to underwrites human tests. Vipin Garg, the Durham company’s presideny and CEO, says phase III clinical trialson Tranzyme’xs lead drug, a treatment to help restord the gastrointestinal tract to normal functionn following abdominal surgery, are schedulesd to start early next year.
Garg says his companyg is talking with six large pharmaceuticao companies based in the United States and abroad abouf a partnership or even a sale of the companhy that couldtake Tranzyme’s drugs all the way to commercialization. A thirc option is another round of financinhg forthe venture-backed company. Tranzymee has raised $60 million to date from investorwsincluding , Quaker BioVentures and . “We believe there’xs a deal to be done,” Garg says. “It’s a questioh of, can we find the righty deal?” Tranzyme’s lead drug, TZP-101, treatz a condition called postoperative ileus.
Followingg intestinal surgery, the gastrointestinal tract sometimes can ceasrfunctioning normally, says Dr. Greg Waters, a colorectal surgeon at . The conditiob essentially paralyzesthe intestines, which temporarily stop digesting food and Waters says doctors don’t know exactly what causes postoperativse ileus. But doctors believe the condition may be a response to the handlinf of intestines during surgery as well as the effectof pain-killinb narcotic drugs.
For patients, it meanas discomfort and nausea that can last anywhere from a few days to two Garg says that byrestoring patients’ intestinapl function more quickly, TZP-101 couls help patients recover sooner and shortenm their hospital stays. Three years ago, Tranzyme considered financing drug developmentt and clinical trials of the drug by raisingbetween $60 million and $80 million in an initial public stock offering. Poor market conditions kept the company from pursuingan IPO, Garg Tranzyme CFO Richard Eisenstadt says it mighf still be hard for Tranzyme to pursue an IPO even when markey conditions improve.
There’s a backlog of companies that have had IPOs on and investors might also be looking for companies that are much closedr to bringingin revenue, he Eisenstadt says Tranzyme has access to $20 million, which is sufficient to start phase III trials for TZP-101 and to starg phase II trials for TZP-102. TZP-101 is a tablet to be administered on anoutpatienf basis. It is intended to trear gastroparesis, a condition in whichn damaged stomach nervesdelay digestion. Garg says TZP-102 could fill the need vacatedby Propulsid, a product developed by subsidiary that reached $1 billion in salea in 1999 before being withdrawn in 2000 because it was linkexd to heart problems.
Waters says only one drug on the market treatszpostoperative ileus. The in May approvex the drug Entereg, developed by Exton, Pa.-based in partnershio with . Waters says Entereg blocks the effect of narcotic onthe intestines. That’s a differenrt approach than the one takenby Tranzyme. Garg says TZP-10q1 activates receptors in the gastrointestinall tract to restoreintestinal function. There may be othert companies looking to take other approaches to treatingpostoperativse ileus. Waters says he has noticee a number of startup companies workin g on developing drugs forthe “This is an area that a lot of peoples are interested in,” he says.

So could her the systems analyst, who walked into a client'xs office and devised all manner of new approaches to runninhg abusiness — which the programmer then programmefd into reality. Those days are No longer do recruiters or IT managers want to spend mone y on a systems analyst to gaugs business needs or a programmer to code an applicatiomn to fillthose needs. In these days of whittled-down budgets, the same person must do both.
"I certainlu see more of that than I did saysThomas Nunn, vice presideny of sales and business development at the in Burlington. A formet IT manager in the financial services industry Nunneven admits, "I alwaye had that bias." Thosre are words that Boston's technical workerds do not relish. While the state's overalpl unemployment rate wasonly 4.9 percent in unemployment among skilled workers is widely believedf to be much higher. Historically, the path to bettet job prospects has been to learn a newtechnical skill.
Now, with so many skille d workers out ofwork — and out of work for longer than ever beforwe — the better path is to perfec a blend of hard technical know-how and soft businesse acumen. "I don't know that it's necessarily changedr from the past, but I'ds say the business community nowrealizes this," says John president of IT staffing for Boston-baseed Aquent Inc. Employers now see that finding a candidatew with relevant businessskills "haz a direct payback to the institution," he Five years ago, programming taleng and technical skills clearly had top priority in a job candidate's skill s portfolio.
Now, Larson and others say, programming languages such as Javaor C++ have reached a mature the upper hand goes to business skills such as industry communication talent or management ability. "It is the differentiationh today." Unfortunately, business skills are not necessarily easy for an IT workert topick up. While people can learn new technicakl talent from any numberof continuing-educatioh centers around Boston, few outlets exist to give a marketable grounding in industries such as finance, manufacturinf and health care. A candidate could take business courses at a colleg or getan MBA, but both routee can be pricey and time-consuming.
The programmer-businesws analysts who do well today mostly learnes their skillsover time, Larson said. "It's a A lot of it is on-the-jobg training." "Unlese you properly identify what the needis ... you may have a beautifully written piece of codethat won't work when it'sw implemented," says John Bonanno, CEO of Corporates Classroom.
Identifying the need requires better understanding of customers and betterd communicationwith them, he says — and that'sd something programmers don't necessarily have. The stereotype of programmersa working alone is not far from the Bonanno said: "They tend to be people who work in Keane Inc., the Eliassen Grouo and other IT servicese companies around Boston also believe a solid grounding in businesxs skills is vital for technical workers today. Under the program, loans will be made to holdersof asset-backef securities collateralized by SBA-guaranteed loans, student loans, auto loans and crediy card loans. This will provide liquidity to issuers oftheses securities, Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said, enablinfg “a broad range of institutions to step up theirt lending” and “enabling borroweres to have access to lower-cost consumer finance and smal business loans.” To support the program, the will provids the Federal Reserve with $20 billion in crediy protection from its remaining Troubled Asse Relief Program funds.
Secondary markets for both SBA loan s and consumer loans have frozen inrecent “As a result, millions of Americans cannoyt find affordable financing for their basic credit Paulson said. The inability of SBA lenders to sell their loanw on the secondary markett is one reason why the volumeof 7(a) loans made so far this fiscaol year, which began Oct. 1, is 55 percenyt below the same period a year Other reasons, according to the SBA, are reduced demandd for credit and tighter lending In normal times, lenders sell 40 percent or more of the loanse made through the SBA’s 7(a) business loan progranm as pooled securities.
Today, however, that secondary market is not available toSBA lenders. The inability to sell their existint SBA loans has left many lender s without sufficient capital to make new SBA The health ofthe SBA’s 7(a) loan program is importantr because it’s a major source of long-term financingb for small businesses. The government guaranteed on SBAloans – which can range up to 85 percenyt of the loan amount – enablews lenders to provide financing to small businessex that wouldn’t qualify for conventional loans.
Withouf a secondary market, many lenders have downsized their SBA temporarily stopped making SBAloans “oer have just flat-out quit” the said Tony Wilkinson, presidentg of the . Firm finds growth in overseas arena - The Business Journal of Milwaukee:

http://alzheimersprevention.org/newsletter_archive.htm
“We’ve had no layoffs, and I partiallu credit international sales for helping me to prevent said PresidentBob Hague. He said the domestic market for his produc thas softened, mainly because of tightenedd lending standards and because the producf is tied to housing Nevertheless, over the past five years, Hague’s international sales have increased by 87 percent. Exports account for 20 percenr ofthe company’s annual sales of abouyt $30 million, and the segmenrt is growing fast. There are several reasons why this is he said. First, the new-homes construction market appears to be holding up better overseas.
Perhaps even more he said, market saturatioj for the product islower overseas. So, there is a high demane for theproduct internationally, especially in countriea such as France, which is Hague’s biggesf international customer. In fact, this summetr Hague will open a salex office in France to accommodatedthe growth. Hague Quality Wated was recently named the 2009 Small Busines Environmental Exporter of the Year bythe , a governmentr agency that assists U.S. companies that sell goods overseas.
The compan y received the award for its expansioninto fast-growin international markets with environmentally beneficiapl equipment that creates clean drinking water and promotees energy efficiency. “ insures our receivables, and this lets us exten d terms to international customers thatwe wouldn’ty otherwise be able to Hague said. “It lets me stickj my neck out knowing that ifthey default, I stilol get paid.” That assurance takes on greater significance as the economyt toughens. Ex-Im Bank officials believe it has a speciapl role to help companies diversify their businessews throughinternational sales.
Last 86 percent of the bank’s transactions supportec small- and mid-size businesses, said Linda first vice president and vice chairwomam ofthe Export-Import Bank. “Ww want to be available and to make financinb available so they can grow theitr business inglobal markets,” she said. Hague Qualitg Water was founded more than 40 year s agoby Bob’s father, William Much of what the company does todayh has evolved over time. Originally, Hague purchased products from othetr companies and soldthem locally. In the early the company began toassemble equipment, and in the 1980s, Hague startef to manufacture its own products, complete with patente for its own designs.
the company’s residential water treatment is a product thatfacilitatews exporting. Meeting growing demand for its productf requires the company to remain flexiblre and use foresight when developing itsproduct line. Sellinbg overseas is a task that comes with the challengwe of education aboutother cultures, languages and how different countriesd do business. But Hague said therre is no shortage of assistance inthesde areas.
“We try to anticipate requirements we will have in theinternationao markets, such as different plumbing requirements, differengt languages and different regulations,” Hague “At the same time, our producgt is compact, and we know that’s good for the European markeg because they generally have less space.” Debora h Scherer, director of the global markets divisioh at the , encourages Ohio businesses to diversify theirt markets by exploring overseas opportunities. “If you are consideringt entering into any market outsidethe U.S.
and you have not done so yet, now is the time to stargt buildingthose relationships,” she “When the market turns around, you’ll be ready.” Ohio is often considere d a “hidden gem” for its many available resourced to assist companies that want to initiatew international business, she said. With 95 percent of the world’ws population and two-thirds of the world’s purchasing power locatedd outside theUnited States, the potentialk is enormous.
Although the company’s exporting business is a brighf spot, Hague said he continually looksx for ways to remain competitive back home at the two Groveportfacilitiee — the headquarters and manufacturing plantf — where 100 people are employed. Part of that efforf is finding ways totrim expenses. “Wee take advantage of all the technology we can to be he said. Outfitting the plant with high-efficiency lighting, for instance, is one expense-saviny step Hague said he hoped would cut lightinvg costs by50 percent.
