BioMarin: Genzyme virus problem won

Genzyme (NASDAQ: GENZ) found a virusw strain and stopped production of two drugse atthe Allston, Mass., facility. The strain, Vesivirus apparently does not cause human infection but interruptzs the growth of cells that are used tomake drugs. Aldurazyms — a treatment for MPS I, a rare and fatalo disease caused by an enzymedeficiencyt — was last filled at the Genzyme facilityy in September 2008, according to BioMarin BMRN). The company has about 10 monthx of vialed inventoryon hand, it said, and uses a second fill finish supplier. A third supplier is expectefd to be qualified laterthis year, BioMaribn said.
BioMarin makes the bulk material used in Aldurazyme at itsNovato facility. The Food and Drug Administratioj hadinspected Genzyme’s plant in September and Octobet and reportedly was concerned about controls to protec against contamination.
